My buddies and I would do this under the Golden Gate Bridge, launching our Tornados. The best technique was to scream on a beam reach in the trough, and then on a monster puff, jam it up and over the hill. Yahoo!
With big air under the trampoline, the Tornado flies like a bird. You don’t need foils.
We used to capsize our Tornados a lot while racing. We had to act fast. The 10 ft. beam of the Tornado is great. You fall far with a capsize. The shrouds are like cheese slicers. With a capsize, get out under the tramp RIGHT AWAY. Pull on the righting rope RIGHT
AWAY. Twice we went turtle. Game Set Match our race was over both times.
We satcomfortably on the underside of the tramp unit motorised help arrived. We used a trapeze
line hooked to the power vessel to bring up the mast and then righted as usual. The time
we turtled under the Golden Gate Bridge was really fun. We almost bashed against one of the
towers. I’d give it a 5 out of 5 on TripAdvisor. It was a thriller, adrenalin-packed.
A really nice skipper on a forty-foot powerboat assisted us for at least twenty minutes. He
even threw us beers. It doesn’t get any better than that.
