A great shot of Checkmate, Doug Peterson’s finest beautifully crafted by Carl Eichenlaub at Shelter Island San Diego when that great marine hub was instrumental in producing some of the worlds most successful and iconic IOR yachts. This from the Sail Port Stephens Regatta, which also encompasses the New South Wales IRC Championships.
A great design always will bypass the evolving Rating or Measurement Rule of the day as evidenced in today’s results in the 3 races held of a 2nd, 3rd and 4th with 3 races to go in this widely supported no drop Regatta.
Current custodian of Checkmate of Hollywood Australian based Ray Roberts was rapt showing that the old girl is still competitive. I am sure The original owner, the Late Monte Livingston would be equally enthused seeing his legacy continue.
The 52 Footer in the back drop is Matt Allen’s current Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race winner Ichi Ban. Great to see the old meets new on the Australian race course. Photo kindly supplied FOC by Salty Dingo.
