The dreaded Coronavirus has claimed yet another major offshore event. The inaugural Sydney to Auckland Ocean Race, to be jointly organized by the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club in Australia and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, has been postponed until January 2022.
RPAYC Commodore, Allen Stormon, confirmed that the postponement was forced by the current public health regulations. “The restrictions of movement, immigration and quarantine requirements around the COVID-19 pandemic have meant that the race is just not viable in January 2021”.
The timing for the 1,250nm event next year was intended to coincide with the 36th America’s Cup series in Auckland and the 150 th Anniversary of the RNZYS. There were 20 confirmed entries and more than 100 inquiries from around the world.
