Sadly the Volvo Ocean Race ‘Final Destination’ was marred 3 nights ago by a tragic accident. A collision between a RIB and a steel motorboat left one person dead and another injured.
It should be made clear that no Volvo Ocean Boats were not involved in the collision but it did put a damper on the party. It would be very easy blame VOR for the accident but that would be rather like blaming a soccer team because a fan ran off the road on the way home from a soccer match.
The attached photo shows the congestion on race finish day as spectator craft made their way back into the harbour and although last evening was nowhere near this busy, it was tricky place to navigate.
Our sympathy goes out to the deceased and already this morning there was a short memorial gathering outside the race village.
