I sat down today with Charlie Enright, skipper of Vestas 11th Hour Racing, here in Auckland and we spoke for an article in Seahorse Magazine on how the team has regrouped and is now focusing on the next leg around Cape Horn and up to Brazil. And when I say how the team has focused – I mean the entire team, sailors, sponsors and the Volvo Ocean Race itself. Just sit for a moment and consider what was involved in re-grouping after the horrendous incident which occurred coming into Hong Kong at night, with the emotional and logistical challenges involved.
I have interviewed a heck of a lot of Volvo skippers and crew over the past twelve years, but sitting listening to Charlie Enright answer my questions, I realised that I really admire this guy. I then sailed with them in the practice race, watching the team do what they do – and I have to say that I am a fan. A big fan.
