On the ORMA 60 Mighty Merloe we just kicked off our season with the Island’s Race, a 130 nm Socal classic. We had a great crew of owner H.L. Enloe, Loick Peyron, Franck Proffit, Peter Isler, Thierry Fouchier, Paul Allen, Jay Davis and myself. We had light air around the course and a tricky late-night transition to a land breeze to finish.
A few years ago, owner Enloe asked me, “Will, what’s your five year plan?” I was and am lucky to know what I’m doing tomorrow, so that range of forethought was well outside my wheelhouse.
“Stay alive,” I answered. “My five year plan is to stay alive.”
When we measure out our lives in sailboat races, every adventure completed is an affirmation of life. It means we’re still kicking and working hard–well on track for our five year plan.
Next up, the Puerto Vallarta Race. Fingers crossed for breeze and a shot at the record. – Will Suto.
