A breezy Coastal Cup wrecked the plans of the Moore 24 Snafu when they lost their rig around 2100 hours on Monday; 30 knots plus was ‘moore’ than the doublehanded entry could take, and they were pulled off the boat by USCG helo early this morning. The good news? By 3 PM they’d already taken her under tow and by night, she was back in Morro Bay.
We need to give acknowledgement to the two racers, the Cal 40 Azure, and the J/109 JunkyardDog, that stopped racing and came to stand by the dismasted boat while they waited for Coast Guard to arrive. Big seas, high winds, dark night, and both boats stood by for over two hours. Heroes in the making.
Nice work to all involved, and congrats to J/70 World Champ Joel Ronning for cross training his way to line honors and overall in a SC70.
