Here’s one photo from a great sequence of shots showing a “Go Big or Go Home” situation during the 2014 MC Scow Masters Regatta at Rush Creek Yacht Club this past weekend. The boat in the front is skippered by Greg Gust and crewed by Virginia Hannan. Bill Draheim and his son Stewart are onboard the boat behind (with the colorful Gus Sails he built himself). This was the last race of the regatta and they were tied for the lead overall.
A gust of wind (no pun intended) in excess of 20 knots blasted down the course on the first run and hit both boats about 50 yards from the leeward gate. Greg Gust gambled on the gybe to get to the favored side of the course and lost. Game over for them. Bill Draheim went on to win the race and the regatta. (Photos by John Hopper).
