Pat Shaughnessey from Farr Yacht Design gave us a quick update of the issue that forced the girls to alter course for their Canary Island base rather than a planned Portuguese visit. “There is a structural issue on the boat which is contained to a relatively small area on the forward hull shell. Because the trans-Atlantic was part of a training run, the team decided to divert to the base in Lanzarote and avoid further risk to the boat. The zone of the issue is one that is very conservatively designed, and has been inspected/reviewed at regular intervals. All of that makes this particular circumstance difficult to understand until the boat reaches its base in Lanzarote. At this stage it’s pointless to speculate on the reasons for the issue, although we hope to be able to make a better explanation at a later date.”
