Seems there is always some bitching whenever we put up SCOTW’s who aren’t covered from head to toe and wearing a burka. Here’s the latest on today’s chicks….
Just a note to let you know that I’ve unliked Sailing Anarchy. The image you posted today was just too much for me. Don’t get me wrong. I’m no prude. And I have no problem with sexy images of half-naked pretty people (men and women) in general. I’ve admired my share of Ryan Gosling photos, or beautiful Playboy spreads. I just don’t see what it has to do with sailing.
I realize you probably don’t see your actions as sexist or disrespectful to women. You’re just posting shit you like and having fun. But when you post images of women’s asses alongside images of beautiful sailboats, you’re (I think, unintentionally) sending a message that women are just pretty objects – like the boats.
Imagine a 12-year-old girl with aspirations to sail (or race cars). She’s looking around at a boating race, or car race, and the women she sees are mostly half-naked ornaments, used to sell products, rather than active participants in the race. This creates an echo chamber that keeps little girls (except the most resolute) from aspiring to be sailors and racers. They are told repeatedly by our culture, from a young age, that they are only welcome as pretty sex objects, not as participants.
I definitely felt that today.
I guess you don’t feel like this is your responsibility. And I get that. But I can’t support – even in the smallest way – a Facebook feed that sends that message. It’s just no fun for me, honestly.
