Sailor Chick of the Week Nahid Gaebler became double European Champion in the Tornado last weekend on Lake Constance; this is her fourth Mixed European title in a row, but her first-ever Open Euro Championship (Partner Roland has won ’em about every other year). Hard as nails and a blast on and off the water, Nahid deserves your respect! Martina Barnetova photo, with more on the TeamGaebler website here and a report from the team below.
Behind us are difficult months and it is a really great feeling to sail such a constant series in various winds on Lake Constance at the Tornado European Championship. Our 1-1-3-1-1-3-2-2 scoreline was enough to hold off the hard charging Greek favorites, who finished second and third place. A total of 31 teams from 8 countries took part.
The winds blew light to strong. Off and onshore. From all directions. The Rhine River delta takes some serious tactical experience, rarely easy to find the right way. One day we raced with winds from every cardinal direction; four massive shifts!
We also felt constantly challenged by the very fast Greeks, who prepared intensively for this event. In 2010, we beat the Greek Team at the World Championships. In the last two years they often overtook us in the final just by some points. Sometimes we felt a bit unlucky. This time we took the title three points ahead Jordanis Paschalides & Kostas Trigonis. With 4 single race wins – one of our best series ever in sail racing – we came out on top.
