A complete clusterfuck during a downwind start led to this tasty crash in 18 knots between perennial Caribbean champ J/120 El Ocaso and local 38-footer Pipe Dream on day 2 of the BVI Spring Regatta.  One boat coming in on starboard chickenwinged the rest of the fleet, with Dream paying the price of a nice chunk in their stern and their pushpit and lifeline/stanchions being torn out of their starboard side; yet another good reason for RC’s to avoid setting the downwind, port tack starting line…

El Ocaso had some damage to their sprit and (we’re told) some issues with the bulkhead end down below, and we’re not sure from our vantage point who will take the blame (besides the RC) with both Ocaso and Dream on port and the J/Boat to leeward when the contact happened…with breeze all favoring the J/120 for Sat/Sun, El Ocaso loses another likely top prize after winning the Rolex last week in STT.  Puerto Rican Lazy Dog will probably take the class after two bullets on Saturday with their main rival out…full results here and thanks to Meg Hislop for the shot.
