Clean Report

The Melges 32 Virgin Islands Sailing Series kicks off today at the YCCS in Gorda Sound; 9 boats are here including some of the best-of-the-best.  And then there’s us – a rag-tag mostly-Puerto Rican team that includes a 30 year-old sailor chick/yacht skipper, a 25 year old Puerto Rican girl on the bow who began sailing a year ago, a miniature Italian tactician/biology professor, and a skipper who’s never driven a sportboat before.  We do of course have Key West and Gold Cup winner Marty “One-Man Party” Kullman making the boat go fast.  And of course, some internet hack on the strings.

We didn’t make things any easier by weighing in 50 pounds light in a boat that needs weight like no other, and our sails don’t look great, but we’re going to do our best to take a few points out Ed Baird, Morgan Larson, Cam Appleton, and the rest of the pros.  Keep your eyes out here for daily updates, and please friend the Smile and Wave Sailing Team page to help us accomplish our team’s dual goals of growing Puerto Rican sailing and bringing the grass roots fun back to a class that’s replaced much of it with caviar and foie gras.  Thanks to Joy Dunigan for the photo of race HQ; it ain’t your average yacht club…
