Remember that sick cruising/racing trimaran with the guts of an ORMA 60 and the look of pure carbon sex? Nigel Irens, designer of Paradox, gave us a tour just after her maiden voyage in 2010, and she certainly looked the part then. In the two seasons of Caribbean racing, she’s proven to be the baddest boat in the Caribbean, and Cali/Caribbean Peter Aschenbrenner’s monster is off to another screaming start in the breezy 2013 RORC Caribbean 600, and is well ahead of the record pace with the 25 knot-plus breeze likely to hold until the first finishers get their beers from the welcoming RORC volunteers. Carnage will play a part as the fleet gets into the long, rough beat past Guadaloupe with possibility of seas of around 15′. Already one maxi (100′ Liara) has lost a rig, while the 66′ Gunboat Slim is out with a rudder problem. The full entry list is here, with a big thanks to Richard Langdon/Team Phaedo for the gorgeous shot of Paradox. Phaedo’s naviguesser Brian Thompson says 50 hours is a reasonable time for the Lambo-orange cat to finish; they’re updating Facebook here and leading multihulls on handicap. Track the race here.
