safety dance

Raymond Smith’s “St. John’s Dance” was recovered from the bottom of the Fremantle Aussie Nationals course today after sinking yesterday in some seriously doctored up wind.  We’re told that malfunctioning pumps meant a lot of water was already in the boat when they dove through a couple of big waves downwind, one of which broached the boat and smashed the spinnaker pole.  A samurai douse eventually brought the kite down, but the cockpit had already filled with water, and a weak inspection port finished the job.  There’s some good content over on the Aussie site along with results.
