But of course!

I was wondering if you would give a shout out to the Irish Sailing Team competing at this year’s Student Yachting World Cup. We are all mad Sailing Anarchy fans and when we were trying to think of ideas of a photo that would be suitable for your front page- but the girls on our team would not agree to do what we wanted them to do. đŸ™‚

This is the first time in ten years University College Dublin has represented Ireland at this event and we have been working on our campaign for the last five months. (And with 5 days to go – we finally secured a title sponsor which made sure we could actually go to the event). Over the last two weeks two teams have had to pull out due to lack of funding so we cut it bloody close! Just shows you – never give up until it is actually over. We were sitting on the marina on Sunday getting lunch and a marketing guy from a company overheard us taking about the sticker space available on the race boat in France- one hour later: one title sponsor package signed, sealed and delivered! Money into our account today, their stickers arrive tomorrow and we leave for France on Wednesday! BOOM

About our team, we are all Irish and rum drinking loving crew! We have some of the top Irish dinghy sailors and big boat sailors on the team and most important of all – the girls and our bowman on the team cook, clean and sail bloody well!

Our tactician Barry Mc Cartin has an outstanding record of being one of the top junior sailors in Ireland in Toppers and Laser 4.7s. Barry has won every event in Ireland in these two classes. Barry is also a nine time Irish National Sailing Champion across six different classes. From 2009 to 2011 Barry also competed internationally on the Olympic 470 Class circuit.

Our skipper Aidan Mc Laverty reached podium positions at both national and European level on several occasions in the laser radial. Aidan was UCD Sailing Captain in 2010 and was also a helm of the UCD team when they won the Irish University National Championships this year. Aidan also competed in the Team Racing World Championships as a helm on the Irish 1st Team. Aidan finished the regatta in an outstanding top ten position. Aidan has also been invited in successive years to compete in the prestigious British Team Racing Championships; alongside Barry they came 3rd this year.

Our bowman David Fitzgerald has a wealth of yacht racing experience and just recently won class 2 with ‘NUI Galway’ on a Reflex 38 in the Round Ireland Yacht Race 2012. David is sailing out of the Royal Irish Yacht Club on ‘Rockabill V’ a Corby 33 this summer which came 3rd at the IRC National Championships Class 1, while he continues to sail on the West Coast of Ireland with Martin Reilly Motors on ‘Harmony’ a Humphrey’s half tonner which won every championship it competed at this summer.

Our team Captain and jib trimmer won the Irish GP Youth National Championships at both Under 18 and Under 24 levels. He has raced on a number of extremely successful yachting campaigns and this year came 2nd at the IRC Nationals in Class 1 and sails with David on the West Coast of Ireland with Martin Reilly Motors on ‘Harmony. Cathal was skipper for the Irish Student National Qualifiers which UCD won in order to represent Ireland at the event.

You can have a look at the team on our fb or on our website.
