Racers almost never get caught on the hook in the shit, but for cruisers, it’s a constant occurrence. Check out the heroics from the Dyslexic Nomad as he tries to board the 60’ Ketch “Southern Cross” when she got caught out off Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific. Yap all you want; until you’ve been there, you have no idea. From the Nomad:
Two years ago this Saturday I boarded this yacht in these choppy conditions! Unaware to me, this footage was filmed by an islander on Pitcairn and presented to me when we next called at the island about ten days later. I turned 21 just two days after the incident so a wonderful present it was! The yacht is a 60ft ketch which my Captain, his partner and myself had chartered from Western Samoa some 2600 miles away.
If you look closely you may notice my hat. My hat is almost lost when i eventually boarded but soon saved by my captain in the tender. It is not any hat but a fantastic floating hat which I recommend. It is a Tilley Airflo Hat. I still have this very hat that I brought with me on a voyage across Polynesia!
