Deneen Demourkas turned in a righteous smackdown in Sweden, and with five bullets, she became the first skipper in Class history to win two Farr 30 World titles. She did it with style, winning with a race to spare over double Tornado Olympian Martin Strandberg and Jim Richardson’s Barking Mad with near-local Bouwe Bekking calling tactics.
Equally impressive benchmarks came from her crew: Tactico Cameron Appleton is on fire right now: He’s won five of his last six regattas, including Melges 32 Euros and US Nationals, RC44s in Marstrand, and Farr 40 East Coasts with John Demourkas. It would be foolish to bet against him as Argo heads for the M32 Worlds next month. Meanwhile, Darren ‘Twirler’ Jones continues to be the best sailor you hardly ever hear about; this is his fourth Farr 30 World title. Deneen did it with girl power too – the only boat with three women aboard, her crew included Dana Riley and Kate McKay. Bowman Andrew Hudson and Flip Wehrheim rounded out the crew.
We’ll have more for you from Sweden later this week. Meanwhile, Demourkas will try her hand at the Melges 32 Class in Newport as well, with a crew including VOR stars Jono Swain and Kelvin Harrap. She might need to get used to seeing something other than bullets for that one…
