back in the saddle again
Well after a few years of some what mediocre conditions Long Beach Race Week finally lived up to the brochure. Conditions were fantastic for Day1, 15-22 knts of breeze and clear blue skies and continuing through the weekend.. A Southern California high pressure system was in place producing the classic Long Beach righty. The day started off with rock star emeritus Dave Ullman giving his now famous chalk talks and then out to the race course. The 1st race started in 14-16 kts of breeze. By the time 2nd race the wind had piped up to 20-22knts that provided some excellent downwind rides.
In the 21 boat Open 5.70 fleet it was good to see a couple of very competitive girls in the mix. 2010 champion Tracey Kenney was on top with a 3-1 and Anne-Laure Le Ny in 3rd with a 5-4. In the 15 boat Viper 640 it was Tim Carter at the top with a 4-1. As for the big boats it was the familiar Jeff Janov’s Dark Star with Dave Ullman on board with a pair of bullets and Viva La Vida with Eric Doyle on board with a 3-2 in the somewhat disappointing 7 boat Farr 40 fleet. In PHRF 1 with four TP52 it was Margaritaville holding off Rio and Rebel Yell with a 1-2.
As for us on our Schock 40, well it was our first two races in our first regatta in this boat and we are still in the learning curve. Our primary competition is the seasoned and very well sailed J/125 Derivative out of San Diego. They pinned us underneath them at the start in both races and we couldn’t match their upwind speed. We were catching them on the downwind legs though and in race two we were averaging mid 12’s and hit 16’s a couple of times. We had the typical new boat, new crew boat handling issues with some bad tacks, bad jibes, bad douses but still managed to go 2-2 with Derivative going 1-1. Full results are here.
