Plymouth’s Royal Western Yacht Club quietly resurrected a once-great name in ocean racing this year, and we congratulate our friends Andrea Mura and Riccardo Apolloni aboard Vento Di Sardegna for crossing the line first in the 2012 Two-Handed Transatlantic Race (the TwoStar). They also set a monohull course record in Mura’s Open 50 of 13 days 12 hours, 47 minutes on the England to Newport run; a dubious record at best as even Mura’s old O50 is light years ahead of the monohulls raced during the last TwoStar in 1994.
Still, we always like to see neat pieces of history get a rebirth, and this 2012 fleet of 9 boats could be a start. We wish the RWYC luck on the next edition. Results are here, and thanks to Billy Black for the photo.
