US Sailing has taken the de facto role of Accident Investigator over the past few years thanks to a few high-profile tragedies, and with the exception of their Rambler report (thanks to a very intelligent George David’s input), their work has been less than stellar as pointed out on these pages and in the forums. They’ve got two more big ongoing investigations in the Aegean and Low Speed Chase wrecks, but a press release we got today doesn’t inspire any confidence in their appointed investigators abilities to get to the bottom of the cause (for Aegean) or to figure out the best solution to avoiding these kind of tragedies.
The release claims that “Independent Review Panel Makes Discovery in Newport to Ensenada Tragedy”, but goes on to explain that they’ve ‘discovered’ nothing more than we published immediately after the wreck: The boat crashed into North Coronado island. That took 6 weeks? Here’s an idea, Investigation Panel: Wait until you find out why they hit the island before you start crowing about ‘discoveries.’
