93 boats entered into Southern Bay Race Week sponsored by Gosling’s Black Seal at Hampton Yacht Club. Today was the opening day of SBRW and around 8:30PM when most were underneath the event tent while it was pouring down rain there was talk of a tornado warning. Before we knew it we all were told to go inside and into the hall way. It sounded like a freight train and even in the middle of the club one could still feel the immense pressure. Luckily, no one was hurt. After the tornado passed there were boats everywhere, 420s, lasers, and Optis thrown from the dinghy dock across the club grounds. Any boat with a rig up in dry storage was knocked down.
Fortunately the majority of the dry sailed boats were somewhat spared since they were in the water for race week. The front windows of the club were blown out, the awning tore off and the event tent gone. The remainder of race week has been cancelled and now the clean up begins. Keep us in your thoughts. Storm.
