Occasional speed record holder Hydroptère head honcho and Anarchist Alain Thébault just overshadowed last month’s America’s Cup iPhone app release with a mobile sailing app of his own, and unlike the AC45 game, this one has enough features to be interesting for more than a few minutes. The new iDroptere app puts you at the helm and sheets of any one of the three Hydropteres – the little lake boat, the original design, or the planned 72 foot ‘round the world record runner.
You can try for the 1-mile measured record or avoid cross channel traffic on a Dover-Calais run or any number of other record attempts, and you’ve got two controls activated by tilting or inclining your iPhone – rudder and mainsheet – while you can set wind speed by blowing into your microphone. All in all, a fun game that doesn’t dumb down sailing too much and gives you a taste of one of the most extreme sailing ventures ever created. And it’s free!
We’ll be sitting down with Thébault next week to chat about his foiling obsession, speed records, and the challenges of a RTW foiler.
