42 is the answer
The question is “What is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything?”. Or, it’s “Just how big is the biggest fleet in America’s biggest keelboat regatta?”
We’re not on the same drugs Douglas Adams was, so we’ll take the latter, and sure enough, a sweet forty-two Viper 640’s are registered for next week’s Sperry Top-Sider Charleston Race Week. The big Southern event doesn’t just have the same old sportboat fleets, either. More than 100 offshore boats are coming to town, including a new non-windward/leeward Cruising Class and the return of the Farr/Mumm 30 and Tartan 10 to the offshore one-design fleets. Inshore sees the Ultimate 20s back in town to sail on the same course with the more modern 20 foot sporties, while the J/club has big double digits in the J/80, J/22 and J/24 fleets. And the parties? Think “Caribbean Beach Party with Live Bands” and then add a few hundred gorgeous sailor chicks to the mix. If you don’t know, you need to go.
Finally, Viper builder Rondar has more to crow about than just their super successful ultralight sporty – they’re putting some serious work into building fleets for the smaller but almost as fast K6, too. Just under $22,500 gets you boat, trailer, sails – just splash and go…quick as you like. Click here to check out the brochure.
