Update: Telefonica smoked ’em once again, putting their stamp on a race that is turning into a rout. Long way to go, but they are, without doubt, dominating this one.
Judging from the sweet conditions in Friday’s Pro-Am race and the fresh-to-frightening forecast (that might just include 40 knots and a typhoon) for both Saturday’s in-port race and Sunday’s leg start, our weekend of spectating looks to be the best we’ve yet seen in the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race.
Another bonus is the schedule: Instead of the crack-of-dawn starts we had in Abu Dhabi, US fans get to watch this one during prime party hours: The in-port race starts just after Midnight tonight at 12:45 AM EST/9:45 PST, so invite your friends over for some brew-and-view on your big screen, or bring your laptop to your favorite bar! You can watch the in-port race live right here, and we’ll update the player so you can watch the start here tomorrow night as well.
But of course not without controversy – Telefonica Blue bagged the required participation in the Pro-Am race to check on the standing rigging they replaced yesterday, and other teams were none-too-happy that the race leaders get to sail the In-Port tomorrow fresh as daisies.
