The other element of what the Volvo Ocean Race is kicked into high gear this weekend with the Sea Skeleton beach clean, the Kids Try Sailing and the Team racing clinic for Oppie sailors, their coaches and umpires.
The Sea Skeleton campaign centres on the Albatross’s of Midway Island and how hundreds of the chicks of these beautiful birds die through ingesting plastic which their parent mistake for food. I visited the ‘Clean Oceans’ dome in the race village and frankly I found the video of what we are doing to our oceans disturbing and unsettling – we only have one world and we are raping it.
On a brighter note teams of Oppie sailors were on the water putting into practice the team racing techniques they had just learnt in the classroom and 18 kids who had never been in a boat spent time on the water and judging by the whoops and hollers coming from the boats instructors Wayne, Wan and Zhang along with safety boat driver Arpad gave them a great time on the water. Maneuvers weren’t always smooth with the first time sailors pushing instead of pulling but just perhaps some converts to our sport after the Volvo circus heads off to new Zealand – it’s more than just about the VOR70s charging round the world. – Shanghai Sailor.
