Thanks to the all-important recitation of “jobs creation” in Dianne Feinstein’s ‘America’s Cup Act’, it looks like the bill (which provides Jones Act exemptions for some 60 ACRM support vessels) should pass Congress easily, allowing AC organizers the leeway to use their fleet for pretty much any purpose they want. Or does it?
A last-minute rider attached to the Bill by Pennsylvania republicans Pat Toomey and Pat Meehan adds three Marshall Island-flagged 900-foot LNG fuel tankers owned by Sunoco to the list of exempted vessels – something that might just get the unions fired up enough to start making calls. We still don’t know exactly how this effects the coming weekend’s ACWS in San Diego, and we certainly don’t expect Ellison’s army of lobbyists to be phased by the addition of the rider, but there’s only one thing that’s certain in today’s US political world: Uncertainty.
