gt and the dub

Greg Thomas and John Williams are two stoked sailors, and they’re making their rounds across the country in preparation for the Pan Am Games in Mexico this October. They’ve been racing at every major event that they can get to, and have had a chance to go head to head with some of the best Hobie 16 sailors across the Americas.

In Florida last month, Dub and Thomas scored the third spot, just behind two teams of the best Hobie sailors on the planet, their rivals from Puerto Rico, Enrique Figuroa,/Tito Aponte, and Francisco Figuroa/ Jolliam Berrios. Both of these teams will be in Puerto Vallarta in October vying for the Pan Am gold. Enrique has been sailing the Hobie 16 for a long time and has had a string of accomplishments within the class ranging from local on up to World Champ. It’s like the boat sails along in its own puff when he’s on the course; the guy is probably the fastest H16 sailor that I have ever seen.

Thomas and Dub are confident that they can medal, but acknowledged in an interview with me last weekend that Enrique, who sailed Tornados in the Olympics for Puerto Rico [and who also helmed the Gunboat 62 ‘CuCu Belle’ to victory last week in Antigua –Ed], will be a very tough competitor. Both Thomas and Williams are well known for their accomplishments in the F18 fleet, but not so much in the H16 class, which is a much different beast. They’ve been training hard and trying to spend every moment that they can on the 16, working towards getting familiar with their new boat.

Thomas and Dub approach things a little differently than a lot of top fleet sailors, they live for simply being on the water! They donate tons of time to support sailing in both their local area of SoCal, and to the sailing world at large. At the different events that they attend, Thomas always takes time to help tune less-skilled sailor’s boats, especially youth teams, as does Williams.

Last weekend the duo made a trip up to Santa Cruz to test their skill against the tough H16 fleet in Nor Cal, which includes several Divisional Champs, National Champs, World Champs, and Olympic Medalists. They won the event handily with a string of bullets.

We’ll be keeping our eye on these guys’ program and keep you up to date.
