Tom Hill’s sexy red and black R/P 75 seemed to be a total loss tonight after a battery or charger fire burned her for a half hour tonight on the dock’ at Antigua Sailing Week. Yachties were universal in their praise for the early responders’ professionalism, with about 60 captains and crews showing up and pounding the fire with extinguishers and waters. Megayachts had their fire pumps primed quickly, and fireman responded with the big hoses but there was nothing they could do but fire-axe through the deck and load her with more water.
Needless to say, the Racing 1 Division just got a boat lighter, and Hill and the boat’s charterer (a Cayman Islands millionaire who was celebrating his 70th birthday tonight) are not happy campers, though we heard the charterer and his tactician Tony Rey has already been offered a condolence ride on a Gunboat. If they don’t take him, Clean sure will on Phaedo. Check out the thread for the latest, and the Gunboat thread for pics and videos from the event. Our live daily video is suffering from bandwidth issues, but rest assured that we’re saving this enticing Caribbean scene for you to show off when we return to the states. Meredith Block photo.
