Stephen Colbert’s upcoming Charleston to Bermuda Race effort continues to bring sailing headlines to the mainstream, this week announcing that Audi of America would be sponsoring his chartered Farr 65 for the race. "As I understand it, my yacht will be the first equipped with Quattro all-wheel-drive.” Colbert told journalists at the NY Auto Show.
The affair was apparently a laugh riot. “If you’re going to win a race, you want to be in an Audi,” exclaimed Colbert. ”I tried bolting a mast and sail to an S5 cabriolet and took her for spin on the harbor, and the results were, well, moist! So I decided if I couldn’t sail an Audi, I would ask them to sponsor my boat.”
Audi of America president Johan de Nysschen also presented Colbert with an Audi-specific life preserver while a dinghy sail was hoisted with his face imprinted on it in the background.
