What, another rendering of a sportboat that ain’t gonna happen? Nope. This one is happening and it is the brand new Soto 30. You’ve heard about it, you’ve wanted to see it. As usual, you get it here first. We spoke exclusively to the Aussie marketing guy behind the Soto 30 and 40, Tim Long, and he shared a bit of the goss.
"We’ve still got the wings, but they’re a lot more subtle. There’s a chine but it’s longer and not quite as pronounced. Long sprit. We don’t give a shit what it rates. The designer’s given us exactly what we wanted; a sweet, simple boat that’s got all the good gear but at a price that’s going to make it available to the Club crowd as well as the cowboys."
We’ve heard that the first number in the price is a nine but the M Boats crowd won’t confirm. If they can turn out a nice product at the right price point, they will be on their way. If it ends up too spendy, they will have a hard go. It is more a big dinghy than a small keelboat, with an ultra flush deck and a huge cockpit We would have liked to have seen it a couple feet longer (the Melges, Flying Tiger and new Columbia are all well over 30′), and we’d like to see more deck space aft for hiking, but we like what we see so far.
