better than video games?

in a world full of worry for the future of sailing, stories like this are very reassuring. All you really need is a boat and some free time to hit the water.  It’s something many of youth sailors today have access to but don’t take advantage of, but that’s not always the case.

The video is brought to you by a group of high school students in Michigan sailing out of Bayview Yacht Club. They have been on the water almost every weekday of this past fall. No coach–just them, a 29er, an I420, and a friend in a chase boat with a video camera. They sail till dark, grab a bite to eat in at Bayview’s legendary restaurant, and return home to do their homework. They commonly launched alongside Bora Gulari and “Bear” George Pete who were down there testing the new wind sail for Moth Worlds. The 29er sailors are Matt Declerq (15) and Tyler Vens (17), who are looking to soon transition into a 49er. Matt did all of the video editing himself. The I420 sailors Ian Robinson (16) and Chris Cyr (16). Ian and Chris heading down to Florida this month to attempt to qualify for I420 Youth Worlds at Houston for 2011. The best way to help the sport grow is to just get out and sail whenever possible. – Will Cyr. There is a thread with a slightly different tone…
