Like it or not, the Extreme 40 Series is poised to overtake other racing circuits as the premier pro racing circuit for 2011. The Cup’s move to big cats has simultaneously relegated events like the MedCup and WMRT to ‘also-ran’ status on the world stage, while the AC World Series in the AC45 is going to be a small trial affair until the latter part of the year, if at all.
But having obtained millions in financing, the biggest competitor field ever, and a pile of new venues and media plans, the Extremes are on a roll, and with the AC hot on their heels, they have a lot to prove. If Mark Turner and his crew can do it well enough, the ACWS will have a hard road making their ACWS as relevant or interesting as the X40s; and if they don’t, the X40 series will simply evaporate. Good motivation, and good news for fans of sailing – competition is always a positive for the public.
Check back here on Monday at 1400 EST, where we’ll feature a live streaming video press conference with Turner and the Extreme 40 folks from beautiful Portugal. We expect announcement of competing teams, the event schedule, and more, and there are bound to be some big surprises, and you’ll be able to ask your own questions via Facebook, Twitter, or smoke signal.
