faith no more
In an incident that surprised precisely nobody, the derelict schooner Raw Faith that’s been featured from time to time on this page has sunk, never to pollute the surface again. We are usually the first to urge on the dreamers and the insane (so long as they don’t make idiotic claims about what they’re doing). After all, Reid Stowe proved that you can drift around the oceans for years without much in the way of seamanship, propulsion or wits.
But Raw Faith was something different: Owner George McKay actually took students sailing on her (calling her a ‘Tall Ship’) despite the 120 foot boat’s pressure-treated pine boards being held together with not much more than roofing tar and shingle nails.
An appropriate end to something that should never have left the Christmas display in McKay’s front yard. Here’s the thread and here’s a comprehensive story from the Portland Press Herald. (rescue vid here, and USCG photo credit)
