Hugh Piggin seems to be doing everything exactly right for his inaugural Class 40 “Atlantic Cup” next year. To start with, his timing is impeccable – With the ridiculous 46-boat Route Du Rhum Class 40 fleet fresh in sailor’s minds and the 2011-12 Class 40 Global Ocean Race nearing an incredible 20 entries a full year before the start, Hugh and his team held a press conference to announce Thompson Reuters as a supporting sponsor for the 2011 Atlantic Cup. Hugh introduces three committed skippers to the reporters and sponsors in the crowd, and the videos of the presser are worth a look for anyone who’s considering solo sailing of any kind in the US in the near future.
Even if you’re not, check it out for the look – it’s mighty rare to see any US event with such a slick setup for press and sponsors, much less one that doesn’t even exist yet. Others should take note; it just doesn’t take much to put on a polished show, but its absolutely essential if long-term sponsors are the goal. You can check out the four video clips from the presser here.
