We heard from the Florida Tourism folks recently with some damage control about the Dengue Fever outbreaks in Key West this year, but just as the Dengue talk was dying down in the tourism world, a new and horrible tragedy hit the marine-focused news. Superstar surfer (and occasional Hobie Cat sailor) Andy Irons lost his life last week – apparently from contracting the tropical mosquito-borne infection in Puerto Rico recently, although a drug overdose remains a possible cause of death. Our hearts and condolences go out to Andy’s family and his 7-month pregnant wife, and if you’re interested, there’s a paddle-out in his memory in Manhattan Beach on Saturday. Here’s a doctor’s analysis of the facts as known thus far. Surfer’s Village photo.
