good wood

From long-time friend and charter anarchist Sportscar: I saw this brand new timber International Cadet dinghy at the Sail Sandy Regatta on the weekend and marveled at the craftsmanship shown by her builder. And that was before I noticed the superb inlaid timber tiger motif on her foredeck. The boat is called ‘Siberian Tiger’ and looks a treat alongside her fibreglass sisters. Built by local dad, Richard Stephens, he made two of them in timber for his kids; the first wooden International Cadets built here for many years. They measure in fine and the build quality is first class. Apparently they can be put on the water quite a bit cheaper than their GRP sisters and that could see a renewed interest in this already popular class. The timber inlaid Tiger motif is something special and a real labour of love. I guess you won’t see that sort of work on the bigger Tigers coming out of China? (sorry Ed, just couldn’t resist!)

We have the Class Nationals at Sandringham Y C this Christmas and expect somewhere north of 85 boats to compete. Next Int Cadet Worlds is in Germany mid 2011!
