no island for old men
The strange battle between ferry companies on Mackinac Island, Michigan seems to have embroiled the organizer of the Port Huron to Mackinac Race – Detroit’s Bayview Yacht Club – with BYC Commodore Bruce Burton not-so-subtly threatening to move the race finish next year. 2011 Race Chairman Charlie Elmer confirmed that he was speaking with other towns about hosting the finish, and both will be in Mackinac tonight to discuss their concerns with the stinky island’s City Council.
It’s not a surprise to see BYC on the side of Shepler’s Marine, which is really getting the short end of the shaft here, with a competing business and backroom politics close to ruining a historic, family business. And while the sailors might be annoyed at changing the venue, if they found a suitable replacement (and what city isn’t looking for a high-dollar event these days?), they might find that the sailors appreciate something new a lot more than anyone thought.
Are the days of horseshit, late night sting operations, and fudge gone forever from the BYC-Mack? We’ll have a report soon, and check here to share what you think.
