Despite less-than-stellar turnout for the NY area’s biggest autumn racing series, the Long Island Sound served up some excellent conditions for around a hundred boats for the American Yacht Club Fall Series. The big breeze on Sunday provided some awesome images and memories (and sail repair bills) that may last for much of the coming winter. Kevin and better half Carina are a great example of the kind of people whose hard work and passion will help guide the sport in the new direction it clearly needs in order to reverse the decades-long slide that its experienced since the early 80s. Part of the group that created and fostered the Heineken High-Performance Dingy Open, they started with a basic idea that’s more Anarchy than AYC: One part warm, flat water, two parts breeze, three parts Heineken, 100+ parts high-performance dinghies and sportboats, all parts inclusiveness. Add water and stir, and you not only win the accolades and gratitude of your high-po friends and the world’s best sailing website, but you get a feature in your local mainstream newspaper and get called "a burgeoning hit!"
