According to reports last week, Ernesto Bertarelli seems to be making an attempt to rehabilitate his long-ailing reputation. The billionaire that everyone loves to hate pledged some 3.5 million British pounds toward policing the Chagos Marine Protected Area, now the largest marine reserve on Earth and part of British Indian Ocean Territory of Chagos. The victim of massive funding cuts, the environmentally important reserve – which contains half the living coral reefs in the Indian Ocean – was at risk of becoming a distant memory, yet Bertarelli and a few other major fundraising efforts have allowed the British government to move forward with its commitment to the Chagos reserve. Now that ‘the precious’ is safely out of his hands, could whatever mental issues that led to his Smeagol-like moves to protect his Cup be gone, replaced by altruism and a love for the environment? One can only hope. Onya, Ernie. For a quick HD look at the incredible beauty of the Chagos reefs, check out this video.
