14-year old Laura Dekker has embarked on her attempt to be the youngest person to sail solo around the world. And whether or not she does it, she has at least learned a bit from the disastrous Abby Sunderland effort. And we don’t mean how Abby’s voyage ended, we mean the media disaster orchestrated by her father. The circus act was a bad one, and Laura’s trip has no media at all to speak of. She left in near secrecy and as kooky as her parents might be to actually let her go, we don’t think there will be a reality show planned around this one.

The merits of letting your 14-year old daughter attempt to sail around the world by herself are beyond debatable, they are almost nonexistent, no matter how qualified she is for this. Regardless, she has indeed left and it will be interesting to follow. We honestly hope it ends well. And if it doesn’t, we’ll know who to blame.
