how soon is now
Zac and the other kid proved you can do it at 17, Jess proved you can do it at 16 nonstop, Abby proved you can’t do it haphazardly, and now Laura will try to prove you can do it at 14. Sail alone around the world, that is.
With the Dutch Child Care Council deciding not to file an appeal from this Wednesday’s court ruling allowing 14 year old Laura Dekker to circumnavigate the globe on her 37 foot Jenneau, Laura has announced that she will depart Middleburg, Netherlands on August 10th to began her trip. Her ‘milk run’ trip will follow the comparatively easy route via the Panama and Suez Canals, and her biggest risks will be pirates instead of icebergs and Southern Ocean storms. Considering her lifetime of sailing experience and ‘screw you’ attitude, she’s got a better-than-even chance of earning the officially unrecognized record. We say ‘get on with it’ and good luck, no matter how nuts here parents might be to let their 14 year-old daughter attempt to sail arounfd the world by herself….
