While some may claim that BMW Oracle wasted a huge pile of money and time trying to reinvent the wheel with their ‘media evaluation trials’ in Valencia last week, we salute their effort.  Not because we think they will discover some kind of cinematographic ‘silver bullet’ (3D cameras?  C’mon now) but because that kind of money and expertise actually might just uncover some interesting new perspectives on sailing coverage that will trickle down to the rest of us.  Only 1 in a thousand sailboat races can afford the existing kinds of coverage that the last AC used, but maybe the boys from San Francisco can help increase that to 2 in a thousand?  To watch how it unfolded, check out the informative thread started by our old friend Malvarossa Beach from Valencia.

For those making the decisions, remember what we’ve been saying from the start:  Make it close to shore, make it fast and on-the-edge, set up the courses and boats so that every now and again someone crashes hard enough for it to hurt, and most importantly, make it about the characters at least as much as about the racing.  People are what makes a sport interesting, not balls, hoops, or boats.

Oh, and make ’em look like this, only twice as big.
