Just 26 years old, Karoline ‘Karlodda’ Berndt is doing what a lot more girls her age need to do if we’re to see a reversal in the trends so many countries are seeing: She’s building a true love for sailing as a lifestyle into kids and teens in her native Germany.
From European Hobie Cat Association President (whose massive 230 boat Hobie Multi Europeans starts today):
Since 2009, Karlodda has organized an early training camp for the kids, this year bringing 40 youngsters together at a Northern German lake. For the youth camps she requests the help of experienced Hobie gurus like Detlef Mohr (at least 9 times European Hobie 16 Champ) to get the kids on the water but also in the classroom.
Karlodda has it all: A strong, convincing voice, a clear fascination for sailing and the ever smiling face saying, why shouldn´t I go sailing with you?
Everything being pink in her life, almost everything, even the custom made sail on her Hobie 14, which only for the occasion of the Soccer World Cup was repainted on her facebook with black, red and gold, the German colors.
She has an active organization of crew pooling, whenever one is looking for a crew, you just ask her, and she responds, what weight, was size do you need?
Being serious during the youth camps, Karlodda is all about fun during regatta events, relaxed and entertaining. Meanwhile she has brought both her two sisters to Hobie Cat 14 sailing, which she loves the most. Karlodda is Hobie Way of Life, sailing in shorts when the sun gets out in spring, even when water temperatures are around 4 Celsius (40 °F). Karlodda is one of her own, the spirit and the entertainer. Karlodda keep on running the Hobie Kids World!
