What do top AC designers and engineers do while they wait around for someone to push the ‘go’ button for the next Cup? You know what they say about idle hands…
Well, three of them were spotted at the McConaghy Boats facility in Zhu Hai China last week, and our friends downunder told us they were bunkered down over three days putting the final touches to the new McConaghy 36 One-Design production yacht.
Harry Dunning, current yacht designer for Mascolino Latino AC syndicate, was joined by Alinghi’s Dirk Kramers and Kirst Feddersen, to take the design and engineering for the new McConaghy 36 to new levels in one-design yacht construction.
Jono Morris, principal of McC’s, told us that "we are very excited by the McConaghy 36 and having the calibre of these people involved has raised the bar significantly, continuing to lead the world in racing yacht construction."
Mark Evans, co-principle, added that "our existing product range – the dominant Mach 2 foiler moth, the new M1 and M2 Optimist Dinghy, the Eliot 6m match racing boat, and of course our world-renowned carbon components – will all benefit significantly from the experience brought to bear by this new initiative."
The first Maconaghy 36 is expected to hit the water in December. Stay tuned for more updates along the way, and check out all the details and pics of the new boat here.
