Anarchists are likely to know of Australia’s Hamilton Island because of the warm water and great racing during Audi Hamilton Island Race Week, the nation’s largest offshore regatta. You might also know that Wild Oats owner Bob Oatley is the owner of the tropical paradise, and you might remember that Oats headhunted Volvo Ocean Race CEO Glen Bourke away from the VOR to run the holiday resort a few years back.
But this week, the island made news when award-winning ‘A Current Affair Australia’ investigative reporter Ben Fordham flew over to the idyllic spot to follow up a lead that the innocuous sounding ‘Success Summit’ was actually a secret meeting of the freaky Church of Scientology. Check out this ACA video for the full story of how Bourke and the Scientologists sent Fordham packing with the threat of police action. Are times really so bad that Bourke and Oatley are willing to support this kind of clientele, well-known for its thuggish behavior and alleged to be responsible for far worse?
Hammo has recently bid on hosting the Melges 32 and 24 Worlds, and we wonder how the International Classes feel about it. And Audi can’t be too happy with this kind of crap just one year into its three-year sponsorship of Race Week. Read the thread here.
