mr. toad’s wild ride
Another Rollins Bowl is done, and I don’t think there was another fleet anywhere sailing that weekend that was more heavily studded with Olympic and World Champion talent than here in san Diego this past weekend. Out of the 17 Star Class boats that showed up there were 4 Star World champions and 1 Finn World champion, not to mention the winning team that had a total of 3 gold and 2 silver medals to their names. Lets just say that it was a tough crowd! Saturday was about as gorgeous a day of sailing as you can get ask for, bright sunshine and plenty of breeze to keep the crews over the side, mix in 30-40 degree wind shifts, and it made sailing very interesting and kept most sailors scratching their heads.
Sunday came and the PRO decided that it was a bit too gnarly outside and scheduled the racing to continue inside the San Diego main channel. Getting to the start line was a case of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride with full on back of the boat planing down wind kind of stuff in 20-25kts. Reynolds/Haenel and Eric Doyle really were a cut above the rest with them finishing 1 and 2 respectively and Eric Lidecis and crew Henry Sprague finishing out the top 3. A big Thank You!! to Mrs. Rollins for hosting and all of the ladies that helped in the kitchen for putting on an epic party Saturday night!!! – Phil Toth. Thanks very much to Christine Mills for the cool photo.
