four on the floor
The Extreme 40 Sailing Series gets its fourth season underway tomorrow in Sète, France, and perhaps the most talented group yet will pound these rockets around the canals of the Mediterranean fishing town for the next four days. This is the fourth season of X-40 racing, and while the entry list is a who’s who in multihull racing and team sponsorship, we’re surprised to see that the series doesn’t have a title sponsor yet. Organizer OC Events has proven extremely resourceful at bringing money to the table, and the package itself is a prized one, providing tons of exposure and an extremely high-visibility corporate billboard for prospective funders. OC also won major accolades in the sports marketing world for their running of the event as the iShares Cup, all of which makes it strange to see them running the series unfunded. Is OC shooting way too high, or is the sponsorship market really that horrible in Europe?
We love the concept, the boats, and the teams, so we’ll see if we can get some answers from the horse’s mouth next week. In the meantime, check out the hot 20-minute 2009 highlight reel here, though our favorite X-40 vid is still this capsize montage. Keep an eye out for daily HD video highlights at the event microsite here. And look for On-The-Water Anarchy to make an appearance at an Extreme event this summer…
And they’ve put together this slick, though ultimately useless online magazine as well.
