change is bad?
I wanted to point out that the article the new way would provide a change in the Olympics that would indeed eliminate many of the serious challenges faced by an Olympic racer. One of the reasons we like to fleet race and indeed one of the most important challenges in an Olympic regatta is consistency and the ability to manage an entire event. Sailing is a sport where you can win a regatta and yet not win a single race during that regatta. It is a sport that rewards training, risk management and dogged determination. By eliminating competitors towards the end of the regatta, you are removing important factors in the racing environment turning what is supposed to be a challenging set of large group dynamics into a match race.
Perhaps the olympics should be a series of sudden death match races set up in a bracket like the NCAA basketball tourney. Or even better a set of sudden death team races in the same format. This meets the need for excitement, involves close boat handling and athleticism and makes for great TV. But changing a fleet race in the middle of an event will only screw up the system. I think this would be a silly idea and would remove many of the factors that make fleet racing fun and challenging. – Anarchist Campbell.
