When we took a look at the new Laurie Davidson designedPendragon at SDYC last week before the start of the San Diego to Puerto Vallarta race, the one thing that jumped out to us, besides the angry dude onboard who growled at us that he wasn’t an anarchist, was the size of the rudders. What do we know, but they looked small. So when we heard that they dropped out of the race, we were not really surprised to get this from Kevin Dibley, who helped design the boat:

"Seems they were in fairly heavy seas [high and steep faces], and the hull got so much lift under speed, that the airborn twin rudders were becoming fairly useless.
Plan B is in effect now with the single rudder going in. Everything is already set up for this. Just have to make the blade. Shame, as the twin rudders seemed to be great all round. They just suffered in a very short sailing window. Will let you know more when I know more."
